Laura Petrey, MD, FACS attended the University of Mississippi School of Medicine where she was honored with a membership into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and the Herrin Hess Foundation Scholarship. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree in 1995. Dr. Petrey completed her General Surgery residency at Rush University Medical Center and Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. After residency, Dr. Petrey received her fellowship specialty training in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at the University of Tennessee Memphis at its cutting-edge Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center.

She joined Urgent Surgery Associates in 2001 as the first female General Surgery Attending in the Baylor University Medical Center Department of Surgery since it was formed in 1920. Dr. Petrey is board certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. She became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 2005 and served as a Certifying Associate Examiner for the American Board of Surgeons General Surgery Qualifying Exam in 2007. In 2011 was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center. In 2015, Dr. Petrey was responsible for creating the Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at BUMC and serves as its Program Director. She has an extensive history of service to the institution serving as the Co-Director of the Surgical and Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Secretary of the Medical Staff (2014-2016) and President of the Medical Staff (2016-2019).

She is the Chair of the newly formed (2019) ICU Peer Review Committee. She also serves on the BSWH System North Texas ICU Council, BUMC Critical Care Physician Committee, the ICU Quality Committee, BUMC Clinical Practice Council and the Professional Standards Committee. She is a past member of the Allied Health Committee, Credentials Committee, Best Care Quality Committee and served as President of the BUMC Women’s Physician Forum from 2005-2010. Dr. Petrey is a member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), the Society of Critical Care Medicine and Southwestern Surgical Congress. In 2018, Dr. Petrey was honored with a scholarship by the North Texas American College of Surgeons to attend the American College of Surgeons Advocacy and Leadership Convention in Washington, D.C. and to lobby on Capitol Hill in support of key issues important to surgeons in the United States.

In 2015, Dr. Petrey was named the Texas Mother of Achievement by the American Mothers, Inc., a national organization that also recognizes Mother of the Year. Then in 2017, Drs. Petrey and Foreman along with the Emergency Department Staff were awarded the Officer Down, Dallas Police Association Award to the Staff at Baylor University Medical Center. “In Recognition of the Endless Efforts to Save Lives on July 7, 2016.” Dr. Petrey along with some of her colleagues were featured in Time Magazine’s November 5, 2018, issue titled “Guns in America,” regarding the July 7 tragedy. Also, there is an interactive website on TimeMagazine.com launched on October 25, 2018 featuring 245 people, including Drs. Petrey and Foreman, who shared their views and described their experiences relating to gun violence.
